Abstract
"The talk investigates the derivational and phonological prehistory of Greek χελώνη ‘tortoise’, marshalled by B. A. Olsen as an example of laryngeal breaking in Greek (unaccented *uh3 > *wō). New epigraphical examples (from Samos) against Proto-Greek *khelwōnā are adduced and a new morphological analysis of the word for ‘tortoise’ is suggested."
