Würzburg's Sinology has a research profile that is unique in Germany and a very broad range of courses that allows students to specialise in different fields of study. These include the history of China as well as the politics, economy and society of modern China. Characteristic of the education in Würzburg are the intensive language training and the stays abroad that are fully integrated into the various degree programmes. Bachelor

Modern China B.A. 180

The Bachelor's degree programme "Modern China B.A. 180" is a major study programme that enables students to obtain a first professional qualification in the field of China. The six-semester programme, which content is geared towards today's professional and academic needs, provides intensive language training in modern Chinese, content focussed on modern China, particularly in the areas of society, business, culture and media, as well as the basics of China's history. A stay abroad as part of the ECLC in the fourth semester is compulsory.

Minor Subject Modern China B.A. 60

The minor programme "Modern China B.A. 60" provides students with basic knowledge of the modern Chinese language and selected topics of modern China. In order to ensure the most intensive language training possible as part of the minor degree programme, the language course begins with an intensive course before the regular start of lectures in the respective winter semester and allows students to spend time abroad in the fourth semester.

Minor Subject East Asia B.A. 60

From the winter semester 2022/23 the Sinology offers the new minor programme "East Asia B.A. 60". Students can learn an East Asian language - Chinese, Japanese or Korean - and take courses on the East Asian cultural area. A stay abroad at partner universities is possible in the fourth or fifth semester. In Chinese and Japanese, language training begins with an intensive course before the regular start of lectures in the respective winter semester.

Master

Chinese Studies M.A.

The Master's degree programme in Chinese Studies is aimed at graduates of BA programmes in Chinese Studies. As a research-oriented degree programme, it aims to create the prerequisites for further academic engagement with China. To this end, various theoretical and methodological perspectives of China research are taught. Students can choose to focus on either pre-modern or contemporary China. In addition, intensive language lessons are offered. The third semester is taught at Peking University (ECLC).

Chinese Politics and Society M.A.

The Master's programme "Chinese Politics and Society" is aimed at graduates of social science Bachelor's programmes. The two-year study programme (120 ECTS) includes classes in Chinese society and politics, Chinese language (starting at a beginner's level), general political science and China studies. As part of the language training, this programme includes a semester abroad at Peking University. Classes are taught in English, Chinese (language training) and German.

China Business and Economics M.Sc.

The Master's degree programme "China Business and Economics" is aimed at students with a B.A. in Sinology or a comparable degree. The two-year study programme (120 ECTS) includes classes in Chinese business, economics and business administration (at the B.A. and M.A. levels), advanced Chinese and China studies. The programme is taught in German, English and Chinese.

China Language and Economy M.A.

The Master's programme "China Language and Economy" is aimed at students with a B.A. in economics or a comparable degree. The two-year study programme (120 ECTS) includes lessons in Chinese economics, Chinese language (starting at a beginner's level), general economics and China studies. As part of the language training, this programme includes a semester abroad at Peking University. Classes are taught in English and Chinese (language training).

ASQ and FSQ

ASQ: Sinicum

The study element "Sinicum" is a four-semester programme designed to provide students with basic skills in modern Chinese language and in regional and historical issues. This programme is designed for students from other faculties and is open to students of all subjects at the University of Würzburg. The programme concludes with an examination for which a certificate is awarded. It is possible to study abroad as part of the ECLC in the fourth semester.

ASQ: Japonicum

Japanese language courses (Modern Japanese 1 and 2) and Japan-related content courses (applied geography studies and history of Japan) can be chosen by all students at the University of Würzburg as part of the "Allgemeine Schlüsselqualifikationen" (ASQ). Students who take all classes (four semesters, 22 SWS) can be awarded a Japonicum certificate.

ASQ: Koreanicum

Since the 2019/20 winter semester, all students at the University of Würzburg have been able to choose Korean language courses and courses on the history and culture of Korea.

FSQ: Chinese for Economists

The study element "Chinese for Economists" is aimed in particular at students of economics. The study element has four semesters and is recognised as a compulsory elective subject in economics. The programme focuses on teaching basic linguistic and cultural competence in business-related topics and concludes with an examination.

Mobility

European Chinese Language and Culture Programme (ECLC)

Since the summer semester of 2002, students at the University of Würzburg have had the opportunity to study at Peking University for a full semester. For this purpose, the University of Würzburg, together with the universities of Aarhus and Oslo, maintains its own programme and permanently staffed office at the School of International Studies (SIS) at Peking University.

Study at Partner Universities

The University of Würzburg and the Institute of East and South Asian Cultural Studies maintain relationships with a large number of universities in the East Asian region, which enable students to apply for one to two-semester stays at these partner universities. Tuition fees are waived or scholarships are paid within the framework of the respective agreements.

Scholarships

The Sinology actively supports its students in applying for a variety of different scholarship programmes. The spectrum ranges from national DAAD scholarship programmes to regional and internal university scholarship programmes.
