Sinology in Würzburg

Sinologie Würzburg Logo

Würzburg's Sinology was founded in 1965 and currently consists of three chairs. It is the only sinology in Bavaria that focusses on modern China, with a orientation towards social sciences and economic sciences, without neglecting traditional China and cultural-historical approaches to the study of China. It is precisely this combination of different disciplinary approaches that opens up exciting perspectives for China research and various Chinese studies programmes.

History

Würzburg's Sinology was founded in 1965. The first holder of the Chair of Philology of the Far East was Prof. Dr. Hans Steininger. Prof. Dr. Dieter Kuhn was appointed in 1988. In 1997, a second professorship was established and filled by Prof. Dr. Raimund Th. Kolb. These two professors retired from active service in 2009 and 2011.

Partners

The Sinology works together with several academic co-operation partners both nationally and internationally. For example, a joint office is operated with Aarhus University and the University of Oslo as part of the ECLC programme at Peking University.

Library

The Institute Library is part of the KGG branch library of the University of Würzburg's library. It is located in the same building as the Institute, in the Philosophiegebäude at Hubland. Weekend borrowing is possible. The Chinese collected works (congshu) are kept in a separate study library and are accessible after consultation with the Institute.
