04/01/2023Irish Studies Würzburg (ISWÜ) at the University of Würzburg in Germany invites applications for the position of Visiting Professor in Irish Studies in the Faculty of the Humanities (English and American Studies) for the period of 1 October 2023 – 31 March 2024.
The Visiting Professor in Irish Studies is a joint initiative of the Government of Ireland, the Irish Embassy in Berlin, the University of Würzburg and Irish Studies Würzburg (ISWÜ). It is funded by the Irish Government’s Emigrant Support Programme (ESP).
The position of the Visiting Professor in Irish Studies is an open rank position. The salary level will be according to career stage (W1-W3) in accordance with the Bayerisches Besoldungsgesetz (BayBesG).
Expectations:
Candidates are expected to be experts in Irish Studies with a particular emphasis on the literature, language and culture of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and/or the Irish diaspora. Additional experience in teaching TEFL methodology is an asset. The Visiting Professorship comprises responsibilities in the fields of teaching and research:
- The teaching load will be 6 hours (3 courses) per week for the duration of the winter semester 2023/24 (mid-October to mid-February). The successful candidate is willing to teach at all curricular levels, to take written and oral exams, to supervise theses, and to further the work of junior academic colleagues.
- The Visiting Professor will present aspects of his/her research in public lectures at the host university and at other German universities with a substantial Irish Studies component, such as the University of the Saarland, the University of Tübingen, and the University of Wuppertal, which also participate in the larger project of the “Traveling Visiting Professorship in Irish Studies”.
- The Visiting Professor will co-organise one larger academic event (e.g. a lecture series, workshop, symposium, or conference) in cooperation with Irish Studies Würzburg (ISWÜ). In this context, the Visiting Professor is encouraged to apply for funding with a research foundation (together with colleagues at the host institution). The academic event co-organised by the Visiting Professor must integrate teaching and research and have a networking effect beyond the host university. It should address topics within the field of Irish Studies which
o are related to the research interests of the Visiting Professor,
o are of larger relevance for the national and international Irish Studies research community,
o and appear particularly productive in facilitating an exchange of ideas in the academic environment of the host university.
- In cooperation with the European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies (EFACIS), the Siebold-Collegium Institute for Advanced Studies (SCIAS) and the Deutsch-Irische Gesellschaft Würzburg (DIG) the Visiting Professor will seek to integrate cultural events into his professional activities at the University of Würzburg.
Requirements:
- Completed PhD and post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution,
- an outstanding research and publication record in Irish Literary, Cultural and/or Media
Studies (very desirable in connection with TEFL),
- an excellent reputation as an active member in the international Irish Studies community,
- Habilitation, venia legendi, second book or equivalent international qualification in the
relevant field is desirable,
- experience in designing, procuring and directing research projects,
- experience in university teaching, and willingness and ability to teach at all curricular levels,
to supervise theses, and to further the work of junior academic colleagues.
