Prof. Philip Coleman (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland) “Feline Form: From Black Minnaloushe to Henry Pussycat” November 23, 2021, 12-14 pm c.t. (CET)
“Feline Form: From Black Minnaloushe to Henry Pussycat”
Date: | 11/23/2021, 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM |
Speaker: | Prof. Philip Coleman |
So much has been written about W.B. Yeats in relation to a vast array of topics, but this lecture began with a simple and what seemed at first to be a rather silly question: is there anything to be said about Yeats and cats? When read in relation to the American poet John Berryman, however, who idolised Yeats, the question has a particular significance, especially with regard to his magnum opus, The Dream Songs. Beginning, then, with some reflections on Yeats’s writings about cats, in prose and verse, this lecture will move on to consider the various ways in which the Irish poet’s ‘feline forms’ influenced and informed the work of the younger American poet. It will be suggested that what appears to be a playful question leads us down some surprising and important avenues of investigation.
