23.05. From climate–focussed albums to rituals in the forest: Christian musical responses to a time of global crisis

From climate–focussed albums to rituals in the forest: Christian musical responses to a time of global crisis - Mark Porter

Music, spirituality and ritual all play powerful roles when it comes to the way we see and experience the spaces and beings around us. This presentation draws on three years of interviews and fieldwork to look at the ways in which a range of different Christian groups have been prompted to moments of musical creativity in response to global crisis.

Mark Porter is a postdoctoral researcher based at the University of Erfurt. He has a long-standing interest in the intersection of music and religious practices, an interest which led to his current research project on Christian musical innovation and changing ecological relationships. He is author of two monographs, Ecologies of Resonance in Christian Musicking and Contemporary Worship Music and Everyday Musical Lives and co-editor of the collection Ethics and Christian Musicking.
