25.04. Intimate Travels: Plant traffic of Turkish migrants in Germany
Plants are place-bound yet travel all around the world—and not only for commercial reasons. Migrants also carry plants to recreate familiar landscapes and grow their own food. But they sometimes have much more intimate reasons than the dictates of cultural cuisines. This talk will discuss such intimate connections with plants, based on research with migrants from Turkey who now live in Germany.
Hilal Alkan is a researcher at Leibniz Zentrum Moderner Orient. Her research focuses on migration and care. In her recent project, she works on plant human-companionship in the context of migration and displacement.
