Melissa Frazier is Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature and Sarah Lawrence College (USA) and currently a Visiting Professor in Slavic Studies at the University of Tübingen. An expert on Romanticism, Professor Dr. Frazier has published widely on authors such as Pushkin, Senkkovskii, Gogol, and Tolstoy as well as the formation of Russian Formalism. Her monograph "Romantic Encounters: Writers, Readers, and the 'Library for Reading'" (Stanford University Press, 2007) won the 2007 Jean Pierre Barricelli Prize "Best Work In Romanticism Studies."
Her current project follows traces of the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin in African-American reception. Pushkin, who was also partly of African descent, served as a touchstone for Black artists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: among them, the actor, singer, and activist Paul Robeson.
